The program i.e. computer application used to surf the web is known as a browser.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer is today the most popular browser in use. Netscape is the second most popular and a one time had more folks using it than any other browser.

The purpose of a browser is to act as interface between the person surfing the web and the computers hosting the websites they visit. Websites are written in HTML and often contain graphics, music, and animation. Over the past few years the simple idea of a plain text webpage with mark up to improve appearance, and then some graphics to spruce things up has really taken off into an arena of complexity and sophistication.
