Web pages consist mostly of text and graphics files.

Graphic files are the way images get delivered to a browser. These files tend to be large and are often the slowest part of a webpage load operation.

Let me put this another way..

Y'know those websites that take an annoyingly long time before you see them? The ones that seem to take forever. The ones that get you so impatient you decide to go to another website.

That's a major killer of websites. People get to your website and want something right away. Actually they want it sooner than that but the more mature visitors have learned they should wait at least 5 or 10 seconds.

Longer than that though, and you're really taking a chance. Especially on the first page or two of the site. Give anyone nice enough, and interested enough to go to your website something right away that will make them realize they made a wise move dropping by.
