Intro
A personal computer is a handy thing to have, and has found a comfortable place
in the homes of millions of regular folks who use PC's, Mac's and others for
everything from internet shopping and personal checking to game playing and keeping
the books for their home based businesses.
And the improvement in the technology is almost staggering. In the early 1980's a
small IBM mainframe could be purchased by a medium sized business for a six figure
sum and require a small department of specialists to handle the programming and
maintenance. And resident memory (RAM) might only be 1/2 to 1 Meg! By the mid 80's
you could buy a 1/2 to 1 Meg personal computer for about a thousand dollars.

Back then, processing speed was measured in "kips"... kilo - i.e. thousands - of
instructions per second. Until the turn of the millenium of so speed has been
measured in "mips"... millions of instructions per second. The newest processors
have clock speed in the 1-2 gigahertz range which means we are virtually in the
billions of instructions per second era.
